What's Baking? Final Project Blog

Above is my brochure for my What's Baking? business. It took me awhile to get everything just right, but in the end I think it turned out great. I was able to fit the entire logo of the cake and the name of my business on the front of the brochure, as well as the important contact information: name, address, number, and email so the customer can immediately notify me. On the first inside cover, I put a picture of one of my popular cupcakes, the "Brownie batter cupcake". Below this picture, I wrote about my actual business and how it differs from other bakeries out there. So the customer can get a feel for what the company actually is and what they can do to customize their order. On the middle inside cover, I fit another logo on the top. I want my logo to become recognizable, so I tried to fit it anywhere I could as often as possible. Below the logo, I listed some cake flavors, frostings, fillings, and toppings that the customer can choose from when making their order. This will give the customer an idea of what kind of flavors they would like to choose. The right inside cover has a picture of another cake I have done and I wrote in text some popular cupcakes that customers may be interested in and that they can mention any flavor to be made for them. Then on the right flap of the brochure, I put more pictures of cupcakes I have done for weddings, a graduation cake, and birthday cupcakes to give the customer an idea of what my work looks like and hopefully they will find it visually appealing enough to order something from me. And finally the back side of the brochure is an "About Me" section. I included a picture of myself next to a "Peanut Butter Cupcake" and below I wrote text saying how my business originated and a little bit about my passion for baking. I ended it with another logo and some information about pricing. I didn't want to include a whole side of the brochure to pricing because when it comes to my orders, it really is based off of what the customer orders. Since everything is customized and sometimes more work is put into specific orders, I just said for the customer to call to get a quote for their custom creation!

I was happy with the way my business card turned out. The logo that I created through Adobe illustrator looked better than I thought, and luckily I was able to find a picture of cupcakes that I had done to match the font and color perfectly. This way when a customer looks at the card, they can see a little "taste" of what kind of work I do, and examples of different events and the basic contact information.

For the letterhead, I wanted to include a watermark of the cake because using it with the text in the corner looked a little odd, but I still wanted to include the cake so it would be balanced with the brochure and the business card and that it will become recognizable.

Overall, I was happy with the work that I did. I am so glad that I got to learn how to use Adobe illustrator and photoshop and indesign because I was able to create my own image for my business and I think this will be great to get more customers.

Brochure Sketches

Above are the sketches for my company brochure. The first one is the front, back and inside flap, and the second picture is what would be on the inside of the brochure once it is unfolded. I wanted to incorporate a lot of pictures of my baked goods on the brochure to provide lots of visuals as well as include the different flavors of cakes and cupcakes they can order and the pricing information. The pictures below are some of the photos that I want to choose from of things that I make for my company. I will choose the ones that will fit the best on the brochure and ones that will make it look good when added all together with the text.

Business Card and Letterhead Sketches

Above are the sketches of different business card and letterhead ideas for my "What's Baking?" business. I like the 1st and 4th sketch of the business card the best for the front and back, and for the letterhead, I like the 3rd and the 5th sketch the best. I will use these as a guide when I create the actual projects through inDesign.

Corporate Identity Questionaire

1. What is your business?

What's Baking? is a my baking business. I make custom cakes and cupcakes for all occasions. I have many different flavors of cake and use home-made fondant for 3D cakes.

2. Describe your business in one sentence.

What's Baking? makes customized cakes and cupcakes for all special occasions!

3. Who is your target audience?

My target audience is geared towards anyone who would want to buy a cake or customized cupcakes for an event or even just for a friends. I do cakes for kids' birthday parties, weddings, bridal showers, baby showers, holiday parties, corporate parties,  bachelorette parties, bar mitzvahs, etc. So anyone who is willing to buy a special treat for a special someone or a special event would be my "target" audience.

4. Who are your competitors?

My competitors would be any other bakery out there that makes birthday cakes. Publix, Walmart, and a lot of grocery stores make really good cakes and cupcakes. But what my business offers is customized treats. Desserts with fancy designs with the use of fondant, different flavors of cake that can't be found at a generic grocery store and creative artwork with icing that correlates with any theme of a party or event.

5. What makes them better/worse than your product/service?

A place like Publix is very established and they can make cakes very easily with the amount of utilities and room they have to store many cakes. My business however offers unique flavors rather than just plain vanilla and chocolate cake. All the cupcakes that I do consist of plain flavors to very interesting flavors such as brownies batter  cupcakes, chocolate chip cookie dough cupcakes, fluffinutter cupcakes, carrot cake, red velvet, almond cake, smores cupcakes, key lime pie cupcakes, etc.

6. Do you currently have an identity?

I am just starting to establish my business. I started making cakes for friends and family, and am extending slowly out to different people through word of mouth and some business cards I had made for me. I have done cakes and cupcakes for weddings, birthdays, bridal showers, baby showers, grooms cakes, etc.

7. What do you like about it? What don't you like about it?

I like that the cakes I make end up looking like sort of an artwork, rather than just food. For example, I have done a purse cake, a hamburger cake, and other challenging things. The cupcakes I make are unique and very yummy and a great option for birthdays and events. What I don't like is that I need a bigger fridge to store more of my baked goods when I have more than one orders, if I got busy.

1. How do you want your image to be seen in two years?

I want people to know What's Baking? as a business that I started up from my love of baking and I want my clients to know that they can get something beyond a plain vanilla layer cake with buttercream icing. I want them to know that I will try and make their special cake as customized as possible, whether it be the look of it or the flavor.

2. If your company was an animal, what animal would it be and why?

If my company was an animal, it would be an English bulldog. A big cute and cuddly one because whenever anyone sees a fat bulldog they usually go up to it and think it's cute, and I want my cupcakes and cakes to be as appealing to customers and want them to come to my shop.

3. If your company/brand was a person, who would it be and why?

If my company was a person, it would be me. I have always been so crazy about baking things for people and making people happy. I also am such a kid at heart, so I love to celebrate all different holidays to the extreme, and creating desserts for holidays was always a big thing for me. I want everyone to be happy with a cupcake or cake.

4. If your company/brand was an object, what would it be?

My company would be a cupcake. Because What's Baking is essentially a cupcake business, I think a cupcake explains what kind of bakery it is and it would be really cute!

5. If your customer was a cartoon character, who would it be?

If my customer was a cartoon character, it would be Cookie Monster. Although he is obsessed with cookies, my different flavor cupcakes like "chocolate chip cookie cupcake" or a cake designed that looks like a cookie would draw him in to my business because they look so yummy!

Lyrical Collage

This is my finished product of the lyrical collage with photoshop. I chose the song "I always feel like somebody's watching me" and found the butterfly picture really interesting. I wanted to have different eyes take the shape of the wings. So I used the magic selection tool and layer masking tool to create the exact shape in the backdrop of the butterfly. I really found this tool interesting. Then I found a perfect background to go along with the theme. I am very happy with how it turned out! I posted the pictures below of the ones that I used to create the entire collage.

In Class Assignment

This is the graphic I put together for Jay Adams. I had trouble with the "breakthrough medicine" logo, but its getting easier for me to transfer different photos onto an original graphic. I also got to practice getting rid of wrinkles with the spot healer, which I have never used before so that was fun!

Brush Graphic

For this project, we had to create a graphic with different kinds of brush strokes. I'm not very artistic when it comes to painting, so I had a hard time creating a very realistic looking painting but I did use a bunch of different brush styles to give the picture the different effects. I used the image above to replicate my graphic after. I got the colors of the ocean and the tree from the eye dropper tool from the original image. I liked using this because I could get the exact colors in the ocean and they blended well together. For the water, I used a "water" effect brush tool and for the sand I chose to use more of a grainy brush. I used two different brush strokes with different colors to give the tree trunk a more 3D effect. And for the palm tree branches, I used a brush that looked like grass and used all different color greens that blended nicely together. I used the eclipse tool for the sun and gave it a bright yellow color and added a radial blur to it because it went well with the rest of the photo. This isn't my best work, but I think that I got a lot of practice using the different brushes and did pretty well for creating a graphic from scratch.

Photoshop Assignment

For this project we had to take an original photo of ourselves and put it in a photo of a place where we have never been. I decided to take a picture of my boyfriend Shaheen and I that was taken outside and put us in front of the "Love" statue in Pennsylvania.

First, I used the Magnetic Lasso tool to select the part of the first image as best as possible. After selecting it, I cut my boyfriend and I out of the photo above and put it on top of the background layer below.

The color contrast looked very weird at first, so I had to play around with the brightness and color of the original photo to match the background as best as possible. Then I took the eraser tool and slowly went around the picture of us to eliminate this "white glow" around us and create some holes in between my hair to make the original background of the first photo completely go away. After perfecting that, I had to resize us down a lot. It was hard to see how big we should be because I wanted us to look proportionate to the picture. I don't know how big the love sign is in person, but I based it off of how large the pillars on the side of it were and sized us close to that.

I then still wasn't satisfied with the color, so I tweaked it a little more until I came up with the photo above. This is my first time working with photoshop so I was just getting used to the tools in the program. I thought it turned out pretty realistic, but I'm my own worst critic so I think I still need some more practice.

Final Graphic

This is the final project. I chose a picture of my sister Jessica's english bulldog Wilson, because I thought he would create a great looking cartoon character and also would be a bit of a challenge to create through Adobe Illustrator. While working on "Wilson", I used the pen tool to create the shape of his body, spots, creases, and any of the shapes that needed to make him look like a real dog. I had to create a lot of layers and sub layers because he had a lot of folds and different coloring in the details of him. I wanted to make him look as realistic as possible, so I made his spots and fur with a gradient to create a more organic color to his spots. To make his eyes look more realistic, I used the blur effect to his pupils. I added some texture effects to his tongue as well, instead of it just with a plain pink color. In the photograph, which my sister actually took with her camera, she made Wilson stand out in focus and the background of the bathroom was blurry. I wanted to create this same effect in the illustration of Wilson as well, so I created a layer with the black and white tile. I also added the food bowl that was behind him in the picture. Then I altered the blurriness of the background until Wilson stood out more in the picture and it didn't hurt too much on the eyes. Before I had just put lines for his wrinkles in his body, but then I ended up making shadows for the lines and giving it a more "3D" look. I spent a lot of time fixing minor details and going back in forth with colors because it was hard to get them to look just like it in the picture. Overall, I learned a lot from using Adobe Illustrator and really can appreciate the work that others do in it because I realize how much time it takes to do just a single picture at a time.

Exquisite Corpse

This project reminded me of coloring in a coloring book, which I always enjoyed. The idea that I was tracing the image and creating a picture and coloring it in was fun because I was creating the actual image that would be in a coloring book. This assignment was a little more difficult than the logo one because there was a lot more detail that you had to be careful about when outlining the image. I'm just starting to get used to Adobe Illustrator so this project helped me out a lot. It helped to think as the image and put it into shapes and layer each one on top of the other. The layering of the images gets confusing at times for me, but eventually I was able to figure it out. The tool I used the most was the pen tool. I find this the easiest to use because I can create the curves that I want to trace along the graphic. I tried using the pencil tool for some of the details, like the hat for example, but that can make the graphic look a little wobbly so it's important to only use the pencil tool when you want it to look unique and give it a 'natural' effect. I think that my exquisite corpse turned out pretty good, I do have to get used to the tools more though. I like the pathways tool where you can divide the sections and delete certain shapes as you go along. I also tried to make the colors bright and work well with each other.

Final Product

This is the finished product of my logo for my cake business. The cake part was fairly easy for me to do as well as the letters. I did it with the pen tool and the circles on the cake, I used the oval tool. I really liked making the W and the heart connect, giving it a fancy and creative look. The W probably took me hours to try and perfect just to get it right. Because it is overlapping the top of the cake, I wanted it to stand out so the color had to be exactly right and getting the line thickness was very hard at first but I think I adjusted it to the point where it is visible and readable. In the end I was very happy with how my logo came out. The critiques from the class helped a lot! And I think that this would look great on a business card, as well as a website. That would be my next step. I'm excited to get started!

Calligramme

I chose to do a cake for my Calligramme using Adobe Illustrator. The shape of the cake is my inspiration for my logo, and I thought it created a unique look with just the text showing. Adobe Illustrator is definitely hard for me, so I took a simple design and created an image of text. It came out better than I expected.

Rough Sketches of Logos

Here are a few sketches I drew for a potential logo for my baking company.

Logos

After searching on the web, I found some logos that I was familiar with and critiqued each one on its appearance and how effective it is.

I chose Blondie's Cookies because I work here part time. The company started out in Indiana and the owner "Blondie" opened 4 stores down in Florida. I like this logo because it is a giant cookie, so it's very obvious what she sells, even if it didn't have the name of the cookie shop on it. I think having the bite in the cookie gives it a unique look, setting it aside from any other picture of a cookie, such as Chips-o-Hoy! or Mrs. Fields. Some things I don't like about the logo is that the brown color is a little boring to me, I think it should be a more "chocolate" brown to give the cookie a more appealing look.
Gigi's Cupcakes is one of the most popular cupcake companies around the United States. There is one located in downtown Tampa that I recently visited. This logo is something that I would love to do something like for my "What's Baking?" company. In this logo, I like the curly letters in the name "GiGi" and of course the unique looking cupcake. The colors make it vibrant and it stands out. One thing that may not benefit this logo though is that without the name of the company, I am not sure if the cupcake is distinguishable enough to represent the company on its own.
This is Starbucks' older logo. It is very recognizable, and their business has established itself enough that they stopped putting the actual "Starbucks Coffee" around the mermaid goddess. Although the image is very recognizable to everyone for their coffee, I always wondered where they got the logo and how the girl represents a coffee company. If I were to start a coffee company I would have made it a coffee bean or a coffee cup with steam coming out of it. But maybe that's just it, maybe their company wanted to go with something abstract that made it so different from all the rest of the coffee companies.
Coldstone has established itself well with their signature "ice cream cone" logo. I like the cone and clearly it represents their product right away. I don't know if I would have chosen those exact colors. The mustard yellow and red remind me of the McDonalds logo, which is maybe what they were going for to attract attention. But I would have picked a pastel color for the actual ice cream because that makes me think of sweet and cute. I think this logo definitely is geared towards kids because the ice cream is clearly recognizable to them and when they see it, they will want to go in that store.
Dairy Queen's logo is one that I am not very fond of. From what I know, Dairy queen is known for their ice cream and blizzards and I know they sell hot dogs and other fast food as well. But their logo doesn't have anything to do with their product. If the  DQ was not in the center of the logo, it isn't as recognizable because the shape and colors don't really stand out to me. I think if they made a different shape or had different color combinations, then it would be more of an effective logo for me.

Company Ideas

When I was thinking about different things to come up with for 5 fictional company ideas, I automatically was drawn to a bakery or something to do with food! So here are my ideas:

1. What's Baking? Custom Cakes and Desserts or "Nikki's Cupcakes"
-This is already a name I have created for myself as I have been making cakes and cupcakes for some clients out of my home. I would love to establish this idea even more. I like the name "Nikki's Cupcakes" but I don't just like to do cupcakes, I like to make all kinds of desserts and I do a lot of cakes for birthdays, graduations, baby showers, and special events so I don't want to just limit myself to cupcakes.

2. The Pregnant Lady
-I was thinking of when girls get pregnant and the food cravings that they have. And how when someone is craving ice cream with pickles, it is hard to find without making it on your own. So I thought of a company titled "The Pregnant Lady". This could be anything from a cupcake shop or ice cream place that offers bizarre flavors and mix ins that would bring in a lot of people who are not just pregnant but for anyone to try something new. Ex: Bacon and Chocolate Chip cupcake or Banana Split Sundae with french fries.

3. Time to Fondue!
-This would be a name for a fondue restaurant. I went to "The Melting Pot" for Valentine's Day and fell in love with the kind of food they had and for the experience in itself. This place would have all kinds of cheeses, chocolate, and sauces to fondue and would be a little bit less expensive than "The Melting Pot" so more people could enjoy this experience without having to spend a fortune!

4. Annie's Creations
-My mom likes to crochet different things for family as well as friends. She makes baby hats for my sister, who is a baby photographer at Brandon hospital. My sister uses the hats for her photos for the babies. My mom also makes scarves as well. My mom's name is Anne, so I think that this would be a cute name for her company if she was to extend her business to the public.

5. Wine Slushies
-I went to the fair last weekend and while looking through the expo hall with all the vendors and different buyers and seller booths, I found this lady who sold "Wine Slushies". She makes these cute little bags with different flavors that consist of this powdered mix with sugar. You basically poor a type of bottled wine into a plastic bag, put it in the fridge, and in an hour or so it comes out to be a flavored slushie that takes on the flavor of your wine and the flavor of the mix (chocolate, kiwi, there are specific flavors for specific wines). She gave out samples and they were quite delicious! I think this would be a great business for someone to invest in, so I chose it as a product for a possible company.

Project I Graphic Design HTML 5

I first wanted to design a cupcake because I am obsessed with baking and thought it would be cool to use if I ever decided to create my own logo for my baking business. It took me awhile to figure out what else to put, so then I included the music staff with the notes and the microphone to signify what is most important in my life: singing and baking. So this graphic design is a simple picture that describes me. What I learned from using HTML 5 was that it takes a lot of patience and a lot of time. But in the end, it's worth it, because I was really happy with what I created, even though it was sad how long it took me! Below I have pasted the entire code for the image. For the cupcake base and wrapper, I just simply connected lines and created stripes to make the wrapper look more realistic. For the frosting, I used bezier curves to create the cloud-like white frosting on top of the cupcake. For the sprinkles, I just used colored lines and thickened them to make them look like rainbow sprinkles. Then the music staff: This part took me the longest because I had to use bezier curves to create the 5 lines on the staff. Then for each music note, I created a filled in circle and attached lines to them producing quarter notes and eight notes. I the canvas graph to try and pinpoint where the notes should go on the staff so they would appear in the exact points. After that, I used a bezier curve to form the microphone wire and used lines to create the microphone base, a circle for the actual head of the mike, and a line in the center to give it more detail. On top of the cupcake, I used a circle and a bezier curve to create the cherry on top! And for the background, I used a liner gradient from light pink fading into a darker pink. I played around with a lot of colors for this part, and decided on this one because one of my favorite colors is pink and I thought it made the cupcake and the black music notes stand out the best.

I used this picture of music notes as a guide to help me create my own.
